How to Prevent Lice

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a way to prevent lice? Turns out, there is! While there is no way to 100% prevent and protect yourself and your family from head lice, there is a lot you can do to drastically reduce the likelihood of being infested. If you have school-aged children, and especially if you have girls with long hair, follow these tips for how to prevent lice. If you can prevent even one infestation from occurring, it is completely worth the effort!

Lice Prevention

Lice prevention is all about making the hair seem unappealing to head lice. The hair shaft is where head lice attach themselves in order to have direct access to your scalp, which is where they suck tiny amounts of blood in order to feed themselves and survive. Thankfully, over the years researchers have discovered that head lice do not like certain smells- such as peppermint, tea tree oil, lavender, lemongrass, and more. Consider utilizing a lice prevention spray that contains these essential oils to reduce the chances of an infestation occurring.

Additionally, teach your children about head lice and alert them of the risk factors. Sharing hats, scarves, pillows, hairbrushes, and other similar items can result in head lice spreading. Make sure your child only uses his or her items to help reduce their chances of getting head lice.

Treating Lice

If you or your child do end up getting head lice, start treatment immediately. Our recommendation for treating lice is to use a natural product that is free of harmful chemicals and pesticides. Products, such as ClearLice, use a powerful combination of essential oils and enzymes to quickly and effectively remove head lice.

Did you know there are also lice removal services available? These can be a bit more expensive, but are great if you do not want to handle the lice removal process yourself. You can dial #1833headlice to find a removal service in your state.

If you do prefer to treat head lice yourself, we would also recommend Licenex, another natural head lice shampoo treatment method.
